Maitland Basketball partners with Hunter Valley Grammar School in affording students the opportunity to skills and experience in community service and citizenship, with mentoring and support provided by Maitland Basketball's Development staff.
These experiences allow students to develop their sense of responsibility as well as communication and social skills. Most importantly, young coaches and referees are helping players enjoy their Basketball game every week while having fun themselves.
BASKETBALL COACHING & REFEREEING
Part of HVGS' values of citizenship includes community service. Open Primary School competition teams are coached by students from HVGS' senior school, with the support of both school staff and Maitland Basketball personnel.
Many HVGS students have made a great contribution to our sport over recent years by becoming referees. HVGS students aged 12 and above are also eligible to become part of our referees - you can start out with a Community Referees course and develop your skills by refereeing in Maitland Basketball's local competition, under the guidance of our referee coaches.
School Representative Sport
Our partnership extends to school representative sport programs as well. Our coaches are involved in the trials, practice sessions and game coaching for these events. There are several opportunities throughout the season. HVGS will provide information directly to students and their parents about trials and event dates.
Player Development Programs
The partnership between MBA and HVGS is also focused on helping young players achieve their goals, by moving along the player development pathway. By partnering with existing BNSW programs, Hunter Academy of Sport and Maitland Mustangs Representative Program, HVGS students have a range of opportunities to develop and improve their skills and work towards their playing goals.
STATE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM (SPP) AND HUNTER ACADEMY of SPORT (HAS)
In 2020 HVGS has 6 players who are participating in State Based Development Programs. Our coaches continue to work with and support these athletes.:
SPP: Shannon Burton, Mason McDougall, Will Mortimore and Mila Wawszkowicz
